Subsidized senior housing is a great thing, because when anyone gets to retirement age, why shouldn’t the society make sure that there is healthy, clean and affordable housing available?  That’s the reason for senior housing assistance. We worship the young, recognizing that the future of the society depends on the success of the next generation. However, why do we not recognize the esteemed value of seniors?

It’s not just about senior subsidized housing; it’s about what happens to senior citizens as a group – a large segment of society.  They’ve spent a life of hard work, dedicated to principles of progress and building a great consumer-driven nation.  Do we just neglect their needs and move on?  Of course not; these are the current challenges and we just have to figure out how to do these things.

I helped some folks apply for Government assisted senior housing a few years ago.  It was a community block grant situation in Northern California funded by HUD.  The application process was relatively straight forward but tedious nonetheless.  One gets the feeling right from the start that the intent of the program is not primarily to provide subsidized senior housing.

Rather, it seemed in this instance, that the process was a screening process designed to filter out as many as possible.  I’ve said for the past decade that the new discrimination is economic and it is often invisible – the discrimination eliminates even the view of the discriminated.  It seems that people can fall through a lot of cracks before they show up on the streets homeless.

There’s Always Hope

Fortunately, most seniors find some suitable accommodation and the role of subsidized senior housing remains a positive one, giving housing options to millions of Americans.

The terms and conditions may vary from state to state and some people may luck out with some great housing, while others struggle with just the paperwork. We owe it to our society to eliminate red tape as far as possible.

Access to healthy, safe living with proximity to facilities, food, shopping and doctors are the basic concerns of seniors.  Being able to go to church and social events are also a plus in many communities. I hope that when my time comes – and it’s coming – that a friendly, affordable and fun living arrangement is available like subsidized senior housing is available.

Government subsidized senior housing should be considered by anyone who doesn’t have a lot of money but who wants their elderly loved ones to live in peace and privacy that can’t be offered at nursing homes. Subsidized senior housing is for elderly people who can take care of themselves to a certain extent and do not require much assistance from anyone. They are not meant for those elderly who require constant attention and supervision. Senior assisted housing offers that little something extra that our elderly require including lowered toilets, larger showers with handicapped railings, ramps for wheelchairs and more and many offer additional services like meal delivery and activities. Finding a List of Nursing Homes

When you are considering placing a family member in the care of a nursing home, finding a good facility can take some patience. Beginning with a list of nursing homes in your area can be a good start, but it can be a little more complicated than that. There are certain considerations you need to keep in mind when considering a certain facility.

A good place to start can be your local yellow pages assuming you still use a phone book. There should be a fairly complete list of local facilities with addresses and phone numbers for you to call. A quick search on the Web can also give you a good starting list as well as more detailed information, pictures and possibly even reviews from residents. You probably then want to consult the local state agencies to determine if any local nursing homes have had any disciplinary actions against them; this doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to drop that particular facility off your list, but it should raise a flag and prompt further investigation before making a final decision.

Things to Consider

For any nursing homes that you are considering, you want to tour each one in the day and at night if possible. If you are seriously considering a facility, you probably want to visit it several times to get a good feel for the staff and how the residents are treated. If a home on your list of nursing homes had a mark against it already, once you tour the facility you should be able to either mark it off your list of nursing homes completely or you may decide to keep it on your short list of homes, especially if you feel the facility has really cleaned up its act.

There are state and national rankings of local nursing homes, and that may help contribute to your decision. It is always possible that a facility with a great ranking is one that you just don’t like. If at all possible, you should make your own observations and not take the word of a state or national agency. After all, it is your relative who will be living there 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Ask yourself if you would want to spend every day in that facility possibly for the rest of your life and more importantly ask them i=how they feel about the home since they are the one that will be living there. Too often the senior is not asked or has no say in the matter and is treated like a child when it comes to making an important decision such as this.

Finding a list of nursing homes is easy. Deciding on which particular nursing home you will choose from that list of nursing homes is another matter. Touring the facilities and taking into consideration the overall reputation and input from official agencies can help narrow down your list of potential homes. Whichever facility you decide on, make sure you are completely comfortable with your final decision. A clean, cheerful facility that has happy, healthy residents can be a hard place to find, but it is out there.

Low Income Senior Housing is a Relative Term

What comes to mind when you hear the term low income senior housing?  Hopefully it is healthy, clean and affordable condos or apartments.  Let’s say we accomplish the first part – we find a healthy and clean senior living space.  The next aspect – the affordability is the topic of this article.

There is a growing disparity in the income levels of the older population in the United States and perhaps in other aging societies too.  It might not readily show up in the everyday shopping habits or in polls for TV.  Nevertheless, the gap is showing up – and naturally so – seniors are happy to talk with you, if you just let them.

So then, what is senior housing designed for the elderly living on low fixed incomes?  For most middle class and even more  affluent American seniors, the idea of living in a senior housing project was until the past decade an unacceptable proposal.  In the United States, an aging population from the ‘baby-boom’ era was taught to be self-reliant and each citizen was to prepare a retirement nest for him or herself.  For the generations from the Great Depression through the seventies this has been the unspoken philosophy.

It did not happen on January 1, 2000 but with the coming of the new millennium came the realization that a shift in public opinion was underway.  Lifelong employment, fully funded retirement packages, predictable family situations were all things of the past.  Also, the national opinion shifted about what senior housing programs for low income elderly folks could be and what it should represent.

It is still relative but the number of seniors looking for a sensible low income senior housing alternative has skyrocketed.  On a popular night-time talk show, the host interviewed Senator Hillary Clinton, and the topic was a recent tax bill.  The senator said that millions of Americans earning less than $27,000 per year would get nothing from the proposed tax cut.  Fair enough, you think, it’s for the rich.  Now, here’s the spin – The talk show host said he could not imagine anyone living on just $27,000 per year – and so you see its relative.

For the millions of seniors with less than $27,000 per year available, low income senior housing begins to look like a great solution.  The actual threshold for qualifying for assisted senior housing is often substantially lower than that $27,000 figure – somewhere between $17,500 – $22,500.

Military Retirement Home

A military retirement home is a place for our brave soldiers that have retired from the military and require a comfortable place to live out their golden years happily.

Where to Find a Military Retirement Home

Although there are many to choose from spread throughout this great nation of ours, there is one military retirement home in particular that is of especially excellent service. This is the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH), and is a military retirement home which consists of the U.S. Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home (USSAH) in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Naval Home (USNH) in Gulfport, Miss.

Veterans in this retirement home come from every single state of the union, and from all walks of life, and have served in every war from World War I through to Operation Desert Storm. The average age of the person here is 76, and the largest percentage is made up of WWII veterans as of this writing. Most likely in several years this will be replaced by those that served in the Korean War.

As for eligibility to this particular home, the basic standards are as follows: retirees with 20 or more years of active-duty service who are at least 60 years old; veterans who are unable to earn a livelihood due to a service-connected disability; veterans who are unable to earn a livelihood due to a non-service connected disability, and who served in a war theater, or received hostile fire pay; and members of the women’s component of the armed forces prior to 1948.

Residents in this military retirement home are also allowed to live with their spouses here, but only if their spouse is also eligible under the aforementioned eligibility criteria. The residents must be in at least that of relatively good health when they enter, but as they age then their medical and social living needs are thus met as they should be.

For many, mobile home retirement parks are the best thing that ever happened to them. The ambiance, the open space, the grass freshly mowed, and the feeling of freedom it gives makes it an irresistible option. In many cases it is a great deal, too. However, there are instances where these retirement parks have been used as cover for the worst type of scams.

Homes in the park cost a small fortune. Normally, people tend to sell their permanent house, buy a caravan and live in a park. So far so good, you will say. However, if you find you have spent your lifetime’s earning on a mirage – the deal may not sound so good after all.

There are reports, which say that while some trailer retirement parks are excellent, very rarely is it that the park owner keeps his word. The park, is supposed to have some basic amenities, such as water, electricity, security, and a gardener. Real estate will always appreciate – while the mobile home will depreciate. This is a very big investment; hence, it would be very important that you are positive that whatever you buying is worth the trouble.

Leaving the above pitfalls, investment for a caravan is very high. If you are among those older people who think the world about mobile home retirement parks – think again. Not all that glitters is gold!

Nursing home activities can help seniors stay healthy both physically and mentally. By being active seniors can lead longer, more productive lives and hopefully be happier in their golden years.
